Skatepark Benefit Concert and Design Meeting

A lot has happened in the past couple of days. On Sunday, July 27, the Skateboard Coalition hosted a benefit concert at The Key, featuring local acts BK, E-Man, Dewi Sant, El Triunfo, and The Cutters. The concert was held in the back yard of The Key, with bands setting up on the new stage constructed by Key members.

Here's a slideshow of photos from the concert.

You can also find the photos here on Flickr.

The Skateboard Coalitions raised $425 on concert admissions and t-shirt sales. At last week's Coalition meeting, we also sent out thank you notes to twelve different contributors who gave a combined total of $450 through GiveMN.org in June. We're making good progress on fundraising, but we need to keep the momentum going and pick up the pace if we want to start construction next spring.

The best way to contribute toward the skatepark is to send a check made out to "Northfield HCI" and send it to Northfield HCI, 1651 Jefferson Parkway Suite HS 128, Northfield, MN 55057 (write "Skateboard Coalition" in the memo line). You can also contribute online with a credit card through our GiveMn.org page

"This is legit!" Brad Siedlecki, president of Pillar Design Studios, looking at designs drawn by Charley with input from members of the Skateboard Coalition. One original Skateboard Coalition member present at today's meeting with Brad said the meeting left him more stoked about the skateboard park than he'd been in years.

The other exciting development this week was yesterday's meeting with Brad Siedlecki, president of Pillar Design Studios, who was in town to get input from the Skateboard Coalition and neighbors of Old Memorial Park. Brad looked at drawings made by Charley Markson with input from the Coalition, and was impressed with what he saw. He said that in his fourteen years as a professional skatepark designer, Charley's drawings were the best any skateboarder had shown him. The drawings will provide a good starting point for a professional design.

Brad met with representatives of NESNA in the morning, then sat down with the Coalition from 1:30 to 3:00. From 5:00 to 6:30 pm, he joined assistant city engineer Brian Erickson for a public meeting in the City Council Chambers at City Hall. There was no formal presentation, but members of the public were able to ask Brad and Brian questions about the design and siting of the skateboard park.
